Why become a member?

By becoming a member of the NSSA you will receive a Zoom link to our quarterly educational presentations and meetings.

You will also gain access to all of the recordings from our previous meetings. In addition, you will get free access to the presentations from our NSSA conference, which was held on the 24th of August, 2021.

In the near future, it is anticipated that like nurses and physiotherapists, neurophysiology scientists will be required to be registered workers. As a result, we may need to become members of the professional body such as the ACCP (Australian Council for Clinical Physiologists). In order to comply with their registration process, you will need to be a member of an affiliated professional body and currently NSSA membership qualifies you for this.

Lastly, by becoming a member, you will increase your professional network by meeting like minded scientists with a range of knowledge and experience.

About Us

Mission

The NSSA was established to support Neurophysiology scientists and to advocate for best practice in the field of Neurophysiology. We make this possible by providing neurophysiology scientists with access to a range of education opportunities, resources, and communication forums that support scientists in their endeavours to achieve excellence in neurophysiological investigation. The NSSA is dedicated to achieving credibility for those in neurophysiological science careers, and provides scientists with an avenue for connection, facilitation, and convergence of expectations, training, and methodologies. The NSSA also offers a platform for discussion between likeminded individuals, and friendship in a professional field.

History

The NSSA was formally established in the early 2000s as part of the development of the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). At the time, all staff working in the Neurophysiology labs were classified as technicians. In conjunction, the Melbourne universities were starting to offer stronger biophysics courses. With an increase in graduating biophysicists, the technology of recording neurophysiological signals was transitioning from analog to digital. Further, a number of labs were starting to create their own recording machines. The technicians were now performing, reading and interpreting the recordings. As a result, the technicians in Melbourne decided to push for the next stage to become scientists. With the government working on the centralised wage fixing and the new structure of the EBA. As part of the EBA agreement, the development of a profession body was required. Therefore, NSSA formed and hence the industry requirements were filled. The NSSA feeds into MSAV, ACTU and legal basis of our pay structure and conditions.

NSSA Constitution

The NSSA’s constitution are the rules that the NSSA Board follows when conducting business and making decisions. The main aim of the constitution is to form the framework for how the NSSA runs, including membership guidelines; NSSA board positions and how the finances will be conducted. You can view the latest version of the constitution here.

NSSA Environmental Policy

The NSSA board acknowledges the global climate emergency, and in particular acknowledges the significant health impacts of climate change. The NSSA values Education and Excellence, and accordingly seeks to raise awareness of the climate change emergency, and to advocate for climate action within neurophysiology services, as part of a broader healthcare response to climate change.

The NSSA is committed to minimising carbon footprint in the field of neurophysiology through:

Encouraging NSSA members to consider the environmental impact of their service in hospitals and clinics, and encouraging members to consider the impacts of neurophysiology product usage, and to use environmentally friendly products and services where possible.

Encouraging our industry partners and suppliers to consider the ongoing economic impacts of climate change, and to consider the environmental impact of their products and services.

Ongoing education about the health impacts of climate change, and providing a platform for sharing between centres about strategies to reduce environmental waste.

Making responsible financial decisions which support investment in renewable energy where possible
